Elba Trail Area

Elba Trail Area is old-school enduro heaven: technical trails and the constant blue of the horizon. A wild mix of adrenaline and primal nature.

Elba Trail Area: Welcome to the Red Planet (Enduro version)

If you think Elba is all white beaches and granite, you haven’t ridden the eastern side yet. Riding a bike in Rio isn’t just riding: it’s a psychedelic experience among open-pit mines, earth that glitters under your tires, and trails that look like they came out of a Mad Max movie.

The Terrain: Iron, Hematite and Endless Grip

Forget classic mud. In Rio, when it rains (or after it has rained), the ground turns into a red paste that sticks to everything, yet delivers almost embarrassing grip. The descents here are technical, often just the right kind of "broken up", and they cut through old mining sites where the silence is broken only by the ticking of your freehub.

Trails you can’t miss

The Rio area is a maze of tracks, but if you’ve got a full-sus under you, these are the names you need to write down:

Buca del Bandito: A name that says it all. It’s a trail that alternates fast flow sections with technical rock moves where picking the wrong line isn’t an option. It hides in thick vegetation, then opens into stretches where the grip of the iron-rich ground lets you lean in ways you’d only dream of elsewhere.

Scalette: This is where it gets serious. If you’re after “guided tech”, Scalette is your church. As the name suggests, expect natural rock steps, rhythmic sequences of obstacles, and a surface that really tests your arm endurance. It’s physical, dirty, and damn fun.

Dragut: Named after the feared pirate who haunted these waters, and the trail is no less. It’s a descent that spits you out toward the sea with a relentless rhythm. Fast, aggressive, and with a view that could distract you—if you weren’t too busy getting over rocks and roots.

Why ride here?

Because unlike the western side, here you feel the history. You pass old abandoned winches, mining cuts that look like Martian craters, and ghost villages. And then there’s the light: at sunset, the iron in the rocks reflects the sun’s rays and the whole slope looks like it’s on fire.

Pro Tip for Bikers: Rio’s rocks are rich in hematite and pyrite: they’re beautiful but razor-sharp. Bring a proper repair kit and, if you can, run tires with a reinforced casing (like SuperGravity or DoubleDown). The “Red Planet” doesn’t go easy on lightweight tires.

Verdict

If you’re looking for “raw” Enduro—the kind that leaves your face dirty with sparkling dust and a goofy grin stuck on— the Rio Trail Area is your playground. Less fancy, more wild, absolutely unforgettable.
